This has been a vision and dream for many years. Sandra A Dayton has been working with the local women for many years developing
hand made products that are being sold to local tourists. The main goal has been to help local women become self sustainable with a small cottage industry of hand made crafts using some of their materials from nature.
This income helps the women support their families on a daily basis.
Our project began 12 years ago when several T-shirts and yarn were purchased. Five women began to sell embroidered designs on to the T-shirts to sell to tourist who were being taken out to their village on tour by Sandra A Dayton. Two obstacles to overcome was that many of the local women did not have access to education and often lacked the skills enabling them to market their arts and crafts effectively.
However it was amazing to see how talented the women were and the great desire they had to learn .Sometimes it only took once to show them a certain technique. A loan was acquired to purchase nine sewing machines.
Since then the group of women have developed a large range of embroidered products and are very successful.
The social and economic benefits of the women's work have been overwhelming. The women have gained self esteem, harmony in the family and a small income as well. The men have responded well, realizing their wives can offer support to the family income.
The women have said " we were miserable with no hope for the future. We were fighting amongst ourselves and with our husbands and children. Now we are busy creating and we have a small income which allows us to buy the things our family and children's need for school".
The plan for Sunday Market Day is to involve more local women and reach a larger number of tourist in our area.
MAGIC HAPPENS
Throughout the years that Sandra has been taking tourist on shopping sprees in the jungle. She has gained a profound understanding of women, and how they have been the entrepreneurs in their families and sometimes the only source of income . This is especially true when men went off to hunt or fight wars, and left their family and villages for months and sometime years at a time. The women would collect food, medicinal plants, homemade clothing, leather goods, soap, candles, woven materials, and walk miles and sometimes down rivers or over mountains to a special market day where other women would gather to sell or barter their wares. This was a way of life in Mexico for many centuries and still is today in many areas of Mexico.
Lu'um K aa nab has revived this age old tradition and offers Sunday Jungle Market Day on their property of Lu'um K'aa nab in the jungle.
We want to thank all those who supported us the first winter season of Jungle Market. Our market was a huge success because of the support of the foreign community in Puerto Morelos and the guests staying here.
Who would of thought all of you would come out to the jungle to shop. But you did, in droves! There were cars parked everywhere. Cabs and the collectivos brought bus loads of people out. An older couple took a taxi van, got lost and ended up hitching a ride on a motorcycle and were driven to our doorstep. Oh my goodness, what fun we all had.
The men are still shaking their heads, not believing women would love to go on a shopping spree in the Jungle. You would think our men would know better!
The biggest problem we had was not eating all the food up the women had prepared before we could sell. It was delicious!
We will never forget all the generosity of so many.
Thank you! Thank you!

This is a wonderful surprise! My husband Daniel has decided he is going to make his favorite recipe of ribs and cook them on the grill and sell them on Sundays to help out..
Don Candelario is making a chiclero camp in the jungle to take tours We thought it would keep the men busy and give them something to do when they come out.
We will be adding this soon!
Learn about and purchase local medicinal plant remedies.
Meet a real chiclero who has been working in the local jungle for over 50 years and go on a walk with him to learn about the chicle industry ( chewing gum industry)
Walk a labyrinth for peace and make an offering in a peace lodge.
